Offsite Communications

For Off Campus Travel with Students Needing Constant Communication Access

SBA provides several communications for teachers and administrators while off campus.  Please see the following:

Digital Radios - These are our standard Motorola Radios on Channel 7-10.  These are non-repeater channels that are publicly available, meaning they can be used anywhere in the US and the range is 1-1.5 miles.  Used for person to person communication within the event participants.  We have approximately 20 radios and of course Admins have them already.

How to get:  Schedule how many needed 2-3 days prior to date needed.

Garmin inReach Mini - These are GPS Devices that link to a person's cell phone for Satellite Texting and Emergency SOS.  This system requires some pre-planning in that the IEMI number needs to be associated with the person's cell phone and it can take some time for them to become functional.  We need to see the person the day before their event to use these.  We have 3 permanently assigned to Al Rogers, Elisha Fowler and Kim Bates but have 3 others available.

How to get:  Schedule how many needed 2-3 days prior to date needed.

Spot X (Grab and Go Option) - These are grab and go Two-way Satellite Texting units.  They do NOT require any setup, keyboard is integrated to the unit and training takes 5-10 minutes.  We currently have one unit and others to be ordered soon.

How to get:  Schedule how many needed 2-3 days prior to date needed.

Satellite Phones (rented as needed) - We have looked into several other options for straight up Satellite Phones. The best option has been Verizon Satellite Phone Rental.  Please schedule a time well in advance of your trip with the Director of Network Operations (David Barber) for rental.

How to get:  Schedule how many needed 2-3 weeks prior to date needed.
