Classroom Computer Policy
For most teachers and staff, this policy applies to SBA provided desktops or laptops and your iPad devices, but could also apply to SmartBoards, Apple TVs or document cameras. It is important that unattended equipment (even though you may be in the room) not be open and viewable to students or other persons not under your direct supervision. This is to protect student data, SBA communications, and your own communications or data, such as partially finished tests or quizzes.
Never Leave Unattended - Per policy in the Faculty/Staff guidebook, no portable device should be left unattended where it can be accessed or worse
Lock Devices - All devices should be set to automatically go to password-locked blank screen or screensaver mode after a few minutes of inactivity. A good setting would be one or two minutes for iPads and five to seven minutes for computer screens
Computer screens (laptops) - should be set with “hot corners” to easily set in blank or screensaver mode when you leave your desk or classroom
Remotes - SmartBoard, Promethean and Apple TV remotes should be kept in your desk drawer or another secure location. This obviously does not fully prevent misuse, but does make misuse far more challenging.
Student Use - Students should never be permitted to use your computing devices while signed in to your account, unless under your close supervision and observation (for example, to help find an educational website they are familiar with)
