Inviting Parent/Guardian to Google Classroom
Inviting Parent/Guardian into Google Classroom
Overview
Teachers and/or parents may desire to have parents’ ability to monitor a student’s progress within a class. Teachers maintain the authority on this, and may invite parents to receive parent notifications that include:
Missing assignments
Upcoming assignments
Class activities
Notifications are turned off by default. There is no access to daily grades, and parents do not see the classroom stream or actual Google Classroom.
Process for Inviting Parent/Guardian
First, notifications must be turned on by first enabling “Guardian email summaries” in the district admin settings.
Go to your Google Classroom
Click “Guardian Email Notifications”
Click “include this class”
Invite parent(s):
Go to your Google Classroom
Click “Students”
Next to the student click “Invite Guardian”
Type guardian’s email address into the text box (there is no way to bulk edit guardian emails, but you can add additional parent/guardians), then click “Invite”
Remove parent(s) Be careful…if you do, you will remove the parent from notifications from all SBA Google Classrooms (See important notes, below).
Go to your Google Classroom
Click “Students”
Next to the Guardian’s name, click “More” and click “Remove Guardian”
IMPORTANT NOTES: when inviting parents to receive classroom notifications
If only one person in your district has invited a parent, the parent/guardian is connected to the student, and they have access to all classes where notifications are turned on. You may need to inform other teachers of guardian notification.
The guardian email doesn’t show specific student information, work, or grades. There is no way for parents to see the contents or receive the attachments added in a class activity.
Parents do not have to log into Classroom to receive updates. They can control how often they will receive notifications.
Students cannot invite their parents on Google Classroom on their own, and the Student class code will not work for parent invitations.
